“Varenna Morning” by Howard Behrens

“It was a quiet morning on Lake Commo as my wife and I took the ferry across Lake Commo from Bellagio to Varenna. Disembarking, we walked through the narrow alleys of this small medieval village situated on a steep hillside. On the other side, we discovered the Villa Monastero – a former monastery that is now a cultural center. The gardens are spectacular and they beckoned me to paint them. I feel a tremendous amount of excitement facing a new canvas. This energy comes from the thrill of transforming the canvas into a recollection of my travels to beautiful and romantic places such as Varenna. I paint fast – while the passion for the painting is very strong. For me, the paint is the subject matter just as much as the image. I love the juicy chunks of color that I can translate to canvas with my palette knife. This scene evoked that passion in me and I hope that you will feel my passion for it when you procure it for your personal collection.” – Behrens
